Now I Climb Rocks – Available for Purchase!
It isn’t a huge book, numbering only 140 pages. It feels, having finished it, both compact and full. It picks up, almost, where Heimat left off but deals with very different themes. Whereas Heimat was a collation of the writing I did while trying to find my feet in Germany, and justify or understand why I was there, Now I Climb Rocks begins with when I fell pregnant and covers the first five years or so of this motherhood trip. How have my children affected my relationship with Germany? Do one’s children anchor you further to a country not your own and if so, what bearing does that have on your own identity? How do you pass on all you know and miss and come from – what is compromised? What is lost? What is gained?
